Along the Hollinwood Canal - 7
Through Daisy Nook Country Park

Continuing straight ahead through the car park, a short section of the canal is still in water before the entrance to "Dark Tunnel". This was built as a tunnel and was properly called Waterhouses Tunnel.

In the Victorian days, when the Daisy Nook area was a popular area for Sunday strolls, the more daring promenaders would walk along the towpath through the tunnel. It was opened out into a cutting in the 1920s after several roof collapses.

The former towpath is now used as a footpath, separated by railings from a bridle way, occupying the former canal bed. It would be comparatively straightfoward to create a new bridle path above the wall on the right if the canal were to be restored.

A short distance ahead is the impressive feature of Waterhouses Aqueduct, which crosses the steep-sided valley of the River Medlock. The bridle path uses the canal bed to cross Waterhouses Aqueduct. It would be possible, with some safety precautions, to re-route the bridle path along the bank opposite the towpath.
